Rebecca Messina is an American marketing executive who served as the first chief marketing officer of Uber and held senior leadership roles at The Coca-Cola Company and Suntory Global Spirits. where she served as the company’s first chief marketing officer (CMO). After spending more than two decades at Coca-Cola in senior marketing and innovation roles, she led Uber’s global marketing organization through its 2019 initial public offering, overseeing efforts to define a unified global brand strategy during a period of organizational and cultural change.[1] [2]
Career
Coca-Cola
Messina joined The Coca-Cola Company in 1994 as a recent college graduate.[3] She spent more than 22 years with the company in a wide range of leadership roles.[4][5], with positions including senior vice president of marketing and innovation, Venturing and Emerging Brands,[4] and vice president of global marketing capability and integration.[6][2]
Beam Suntory
After leaving Coca-Cola, Messina became senior vice president and global CMO of Beam Suntory in April 2016.[4][6] She was responsible for global brand strategy, communications, product innovation, research and development, and consumer insights for a portfolio that included brands such as Jim Beam, Maker’s Mark, and Yamazaki Whisky.[7] Her appointment required relocating from Atlanta to Chicago.[4] She spent approximately two and a half years in the role,[1] reporting directly to chairman and CEO Matt Shattock.[6]
Uber
In 2018, Messina was appointed Uber’s first global chief marketing officer.[1][5] She began the role in October 2018,[8] succeeding former chief brand officer Bozoma Saint John.[8]
As Uber’s first chief marketing officer, Messina was tasked with building a centralized global marketing organization and articulating a unified brand strategy as the company prepared for its initial public offering.[2][9]
Messina served as CMO through Uber’s 2019 initial public offering. She and Uber’s COO, Barney Harford, later stepped down after a restructuring that consolidated the company’s marketing, communications, and policy functions under Jill Hazelbaker.[10][8]
According to CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, Messina agreed that it “made sense for her to move on” following the reorganization.[10]
Personal life
Messina’s husband, Derk Hendriksen, is Dutch and served as general manager of EKOCENTER at Coca-Cola. The couple met while working for the company in France.[4]
She has lived in Atlanta, Chicago, Amsterdam, Italy, and several countries during her Coca-Cola career, including Chile, France, and Argentina.[4]
